Trip followup ..
bugs in Tenn liked to bite us .. we had numerous bug, spider bites ….
sent GPS unit back to Garmin .. turns out that Garmin has known issues with our unit .. sent back to Garmin .. they will repair for free
need to figure out why Casita fridge was not cooling enough .. freezer worked OK .. fridge section was way too warm .. threw out alot of food
learned that we need to check electricity at all campsites .. we have a voltage tester .. we need to use it
we need to eat more at truck stops and less at Cracker Barrel
learned that it is a 3 day drive from Pikeville to Gouldsboro
Chattanooga & 4 Paws & Pikeville deserve followup visit
Rock City is nice place to visit
Terri takes some excellent pictures while we’re driving
Terri took some excellent photo’s using my Canon S3 … could this mean I can upgrade my camera to a Nikon D90 🙂
Tenn has some beautiful scenery
I don’t know diddly about plumbing
total mileage from Pikeville to Gouldsboro is 810 miles …..
Left Nick & Leslie’s at approx 8:30 … trouble’s start as soon as we drive out of the driveway … Ms Garmin will not acquire satellites .. later .. the unit would not even power up !! We depend on GPS alot .. so .. we were navigating ‘old school’ .. we had a few maps with us .. One of the things we use Garmin for is estimating mileage and times from location to location … plotting this manually is a little tricky … we miscalculated our driving times and ended up driving for 11 hours … 550 miles … far more then we planned for .. it was a long day driving !!! While driving .. we made reservations at a KOA campsite in Staunton VA … pulled in to campsite at approx 7:30 .. While making reservations KOA dude said getting a pull through site was no problem .. after driving all day .. last thing I wanted to do was back in to a tight spot .. So .. our adventures continued .. got to our site .. it was an extremely tight back in site .. I was not a happy camper .. after a few attempts .. we backed trailer in OK … while hooking up water, sewer and electric .. we noticed that our hookup connections were pretty far away from trailer .. fortunately we had spare water hose & electric cable connections .. sewer hose connection was OK .. OK .. so far .. we’re doing OK .. got settled into Casita .. broke out the laptops for some internet action .. (while checking in .. I paid $2 for one day’s internet action (this is the first time we’ve paid for internet access) .. well I was tired and didn’t realized they charged me $6 .. my fault .. I should have checked … ) well .. when we fired up the laptops .. we could not access campgrounds internet server … by the time we figured out we had internet issues the office was closed for the night … now I’m really getting ticked off 🙂 Went to bed early .. we need to get of this place early tomorrow … of course when we pulled out of our site .. office was not open yet .. so I couldn’t complain to folks in office !!! Left campsite at approx 7:30 … stopped at Flying J truck stop on the way home to gas up truck and have lunch … our first time at a Flying J .. pretty nice place … in the future .. I think we’ll stop at these truck stops .. Flying J .. Loves .. Petrol .. more often .. lots of parking .. decent food .. we’re getting burned out on the Cracker Barrels !!!
Firemen checking out the Casita
As we approached Rt 80 .. we noticed dark clouds ahead of us .. we’re sure we’re going to arrive at BBL in a rain storm .. it doesn’t look good … as we hit Rt 380 heading to Gouldsboro exit .. rain started … rained on & off along Rt 380 … arrived at 888 Lyman Lane at 3:30 … dark clouds .. but .. rain has stopped .. but very dark clouds still overhead … backed trailer in driveway .. (we’re getting better at this !) .. It takes us longer to level trailer than it does to back it in .. unloaded stuff from truck bed .. and then the skies opened up .. heavy rain & thunder … yes .. the weather gods are with us this time !!!!!!!
Spent most of the day working on bathroom project … as Nick was designed layout of copper pipes .. I helped cut copper tubing and drilling holes in floor support structure … Terri and Leslie worked on cutting out wood to block openings so the shrews won’t be able to get into garage .. and making a wooden tabletop …. when project is complete there will be a toilet, shower/bathtub, washer & dryer … quite the project !!!!
Terri & Leslie's woodworking project
Laying out copper tubing
Off to Chattanooga ….
After a scenic ride through Tenn hills .. we spent most of the day at Rock City … pretty amazing place with great scenery .. rock formations and gardens .. alot of ‘adventures’ .. Needle’s Eye, Fat Man’s Squeeze, Goblin’s Underpass, Sky Bridge, Observation Point, Swing-Along Bridge, Mushroom Rock .. etc ..
After checking out Rock City we went to Chattanooga to check out some sights .. had lunch at a place called Cheeburger Cheeburger … excellent burgers, fries and onion rings … then we went on a pedestrian bridge .. Walnut St bridge …excellent views of boats and river .. then went to a coffee shop that Rachel Ray featured on one of her shows .. had some ice tea (very hot day to be walking around) and a slice of cheesecake …
Today’s primary task is to head to Lowes … picked up alot of copper fittings and pipe for bathroom project .. also a electrical outlet so we can plug in Casita for some AC power … Leslie and Terri went to Walmart to get some supplies while we were getting stuff at Lowes … Nick’s neighbor ‘Jack’ was waiting for us when we arrived back home .. Jack helped install outlet .. and Casita was back on AC power … Tomorrow we’re heading for Rock City in Chattanooga Tenn …
Nick & Leslie's Tenn Property
Up at 7am .. breakfast .. then packing up .. Heading to Tenn … probably no internet access until we begin our journey home …
A few rain showers on our way to Pikeville Tenn …. we were able to shoot some photos of rain running off some of the mountains .. Terri’s getting pretty good at taking photos was we’re driving … Passed through some ‘cool’ towns in North Carolina .. Lake Lure .. Bat Cave .. Chimney Rock. We need to do more exploring in small towns …. Casita survived some extremly switchback roads .. and we arrived in Pikeville with no problems .. Encountered some issues setting up at Pikeville ‘campground’ ie .. Nick & Leslie’s property .. No electricity coming from outlet plug .. took us awhile to figure out what was going on .. fortunately Nick had a portable generator so we were able to have power during the night .. temps at 4Paws and in Tenn were very hot …. Tomorrw .. Nick and I are heading to Lowes to pickup a new power outlet and some plumbing supplies for bathroom project Nick is working on ..
Following the Trail Manor to Pikeville
Encountering some rain along the way ..
Hey .. no rain in the past 24 hours … !!!
Alot of things going on today … Casita Crawl in the afternoon .. For those of you who have never attended a Casista Crawl .. 🙂 It’s when you can walk around and look at all of the trailers .. good way to see what other folks have done to their trailer and to hear about their adventures … 17 trailers signed up for rally .. mostly Casitas .. but there were a few other non Casitas.. including Nick’s and Leslie’s Trail Manor .. Met alot of nice folks .. picked up a few good ideas for trailer … I’ll post a few photo’s on this post .. and put the rest of photo’s in ‘My Photos’ link ..
After touring the trailers .. we stopped at some folks that are ‘professional’ trailers .. they brought 2 dogs that they have been training since they were puppies .. they will spend 12-17 months training a puppy then they dog will leave them for further training .. eventually dogs will be placed in homes hat have disabilities of one kind or another .. It’s amazing how well trained the dogs are .. I took a video clip of one of their training drills …scenario is that dog will lie down with a dog treat on each paw .. dog will NOT eat the treat until trainer says the word ‘release’ .. you could tell him any word that sounded like release .. he wouldn’t eat those snacks until the word release is spoken by trainer… amazing !! I don’t I can add video clip to blog .. I’ll have to tray and figure out a way to send it ..
Kyper working with trainer…..
Later in the afternoon we attended an ‘Ice Cream’ Social … HHH weather .. ice cream tasted mighty tasty .. again some of $$ collected went to canine support groups … In the evening we attended a Mexican Pot luck dinner .. Terri made some tasty ‘Mexican’ chicken … all good food .. we didn’t leave hungry ..
