May 15 ‘Dead Horse State Park’

After a ‘Flapjack’ fiasco for this mornings breakfast .. we’re heading to ‘Dead Horse’ … Flapjack fiasco was my attempt to make some pancakes on our propane grill with the wrong pan .. should have packed a flat grill pan .. !!  Instead we packed a multi purpose pan that had a flat surface on one side and a grilling side on the other .. this pan would not stay on the propane grill .. flapjacks got ‘a little’ over done !  🙂

Anyway .. ‘Dead Horse’ is only 30 min from campsite .. so … we’re in no rush to leave this morning ..

The Legend of Dead Horse Point

Dead Horse Point is a peninsula of rock atop sheer sandstone cliffs. The peninsula is connected to the mesa by a narrow strip of land called the neck. There are many stories about how this high promontory of land received its name

‘According to one legend, around the turn of the century the point was used as a corral for wild mustangs roaming the mesa top. Cowboys rounded up these horses, herded them across the narrow neck of land and onto the point. The neck, which is only 30-yards-wide, was then fenced off with branches and brush. This created a natural corral surrounded by precipitous cliffs straight down on all sides, affording no escape. Cowboys then chose the horses they wanted and let the culls or broomtails go free. One time, for some unknown reason, horses were left corralled on the waterless point where they died of thirst within view of the Colorado River, 2,000 feet below.’

Spent most of day at Dead Horse … very .. very scenic area .. rock sculptures very different than the Arches .. alot more color in the canyons of Dead Horse .. Scoop on Dead Horse is that they consider the National Park a smaller version of the Grand Canyon only on a smaller scale … we believe it … very beautiful scenery …  According to an info video movie we saw in the visitor center … area has been used for quite a few movies … Thelma & Louise’ , of bunch of Western movies, backround for a Tom Cruise movie .  After checking in at visitor center ..we took the first of 2 hikes …. together we hiked for about 6 miles …. Great area to walk .. nice trails that look out on beautiful scenery. Thought we could hang around till sunset to try and take some photos of sun hitting the canyon walls .. but .. we were done at about 4pm … couldn’t hang on till 8 pm .. In some of the pictures you’ll see a body of very blue water .. looks very weird in that the Canyon is an arid landscape ..  It’s called a solar evaporation field … Weather was so sunny and warm  that we should have had some sunscreen on .. we got abit too much sun .. we’re abit toasty !  ..  Back to campsite .. showered .. checking out our photos as I’m watching Yanks and Bosox …    Heading to Canyon National Park tomorrow ….

I know what you mean about the pancakes (or’ flapjacks’ as you cowboys call them!) We used to use a regular cast iron frying pan in the camper, but it never worked very well. We eventually bought a flat grill that spans two burners – much better for pancakes.

Interesting story about Dead Horse Point.
