June 15 Heading Home …….

Get away day … !  It’s been a fun few days for us .. a different kind of camping experience.  Instead of running around trying to do sightseeing and other tourist-y things .. we stayed close to campsite .. slept late .. cooked all of our meals at campsite except for our one rainy day, and basically relaxed.  We’ll do this more often .. especially at Promise Land …

So .. we were at the dump station at approx 11:00 .. while I attended to the dumping chores .. Terri went down to the lake and tried to catch a glimpse of the eagle we saw yesterday .  Success .. eagle was in same tree we saw him in yesterday ! Terri was able to take some good photos …  wish we would have brought our monopod to help steady the camera ..  actually .. I brought  my tripod .. but .. forgot the piece that connects camera to tripod. I need to come with a camera cheat sheet .. things I should pack for our cameras. Think we may also look for a spotting scope .. zooming in closer to birds/wildlife would be interesting .. using spotting scope with one of our camera would be better yet !  Before we left campground .. I took about an hour to ‘hone’ my backing up skills .. backed up into several sites, by the time we were done, I had a better feel for what I was doing .. should have done this when I first picked Casita up .. better late than never I guess.

Easy ride home .. less than an hour. Tried a different method of unloading kayaks … found that if I stood in bed of truck, unloading was a lot easier, will try this next time we load them up again.

A few photos from today …

June 14 Promise Land Kayaks Launched !

The day we’ve been waiting for … blue sky this morning !  Today we hit the lake with kayaks !  After breakfast & showers .. we packed a quick lunch and headed for the water .. nearest launch ramp is only a few minutes from us .. so it didn’t take us long .. Unloaded kayaks .. always easier to take them down from roof rack than to put them up !  As we were preparing kayaks .. Terri noticed an eagle in the trees across the lake from us …  good spotting .. because I didn’t see it. Fortunately .. eagle was in no hurry to move .. so we were able to get a little closer to it to take some photos .. bad news is we only had our small point & shoot camera that does not have a great zoom…  Took a few photos .. and headed out to the lake(s) for a few hours ..  relatively calm waters .. very little wind .. ideal day to be in the kayaks .. Ate our lunch out on the lake … enjoying the nice day.  As he headed back to our launch ramp .. we noticed eagle had moved on .. tried to find his nest with no success.  A few issues loading up kayaks .. kayaks have gotten heaver .. we’re not as strong as we need to be to lift them. Problems being .. our full size truck roof is pretty high .. we need to lift kayaks over our heads to get them in the racks .. and last but not least .. we are vertically challenged .. kayaks need to lifted high over our head !  Took us a few attempts with one of the kayaks .. the other went up pretty easy.  We’ll need to come up with an easier way to load up the kayaks .. no doubt about it.  We’re not getting younger or stronger .. so .. we need to be smarter.

Thinking we’ll leave around noon tomorrow … we’ve had a good few days .. time to move on.  Before we leave the campsite .. I think we’ll take this excellent opportunity to practice my backing up .. I’ll just drive around and keep backing up till I feel more comfortable doing it. We’ve never gotten into a situation where we couldn’t back in to a site .. but .. some sites have been more challenging than others.

June 13 Promise Land

Finally stopped raining this morning ..  Cool and sunny all day today ..  a little too windy to launch kayaks .. forecast is calling for a calmer day tomorrow ..  Took a few hikes in different areas of the park .. other than kayaking .. we’ve done pretty much all we can do, other a little more hiking.  MIFI has been pretty reliable .. certainly doesn’t replace our home internet service .. but .. it’s doing an OK job.  Not much going on at campsite .. a lot of Kindle reading .. and Terri catching up on some needlework projects.  Weather seems to be getting better everyday .. need to get those kayaks in the water !

June 12 Day 2 Promise Land

Lake within walking distance of our site

Slept well last nite .. campground is quiet .. and it was pitch black … no curtains needed to block out lights. There are only 2 other campers in our row .. so .. very little traffic goes by us.  Slept late .. breakfast .. then off to campground showers .. Showers/rest rooms are kept very clean .. cleaner than some private campgrounds we’ve been to.  For $20 per nite .. (that includes my geezer discount), campground has turned out to be a pleasant surprise.

Rained all day today .. took a trip to local town of Milford. Small town with a few antique stores and other shopping opportunities.. After browsing around for awhile .. had  lunch at a place called Dimock Inn .. It’s an old building converted from hotel to restaurant in the middle of town.  Back to camper .. to do some serious puttering around .. ie.. reading the Kindle .. upgrading Terri’s laptop from 1 GB memory to 2 GB .. testing all Casita systems  (furnace, AC), and surfing the internet.  Casita systems all checked out .. so .. I think we’re ready for bigger and better adventures !

Hope to be kayaking tomorrow !!

June 11 2012 First Casita Trip of the Year

Finally on the road again..  we’re staying at Promise Land State Park (PA) ..  Since it’s our first trip .. we wanted to stay local .. Park is only an hour from Gouldsboro.. No issues with Casita, all systems working well ..  only issues have been learning curve issues .. like best way to load Kayaks on truck roof.. seems as though kayaks gained weight over the Winter .. they seemed much heavier to lift this year !  Had some  issues with awning .. but again .. learning curve issues .. we haven’t used awning that much since we’ve had the Casita .. finally figured out our issues … minor issues.

Only electric service at site, no water hookups  .. no WIFI .. we’re using our Verizon  MIFI (portable router) for internet access, so far  so good .. good response time and good connections.  More learning curves … WordPress has made changes to it’s site .. so I’ve got to figure out what’s going on ! In that we don’t have a higher speed connection .. we’ll only post a few photos in blog .. loading more when we get home.

Brought kayaks with us .. hope to use them at least 2 days of the 4 we are here .. a lot of rainy or threats of rain days in our forecast..  We’ll see what happens …
