June 14 Custer State Park

Rain/thundestorms/lightning during the night ..  one crash of thunder sounded like it was right above Casita ..  very loud and we could almost feel the Casita wobble !  Kept us awake for a few hours .. but .. storm eventually subsided and we went back to sleep. Rest of day was a mix of clouds/sun and more rain. Forcast for tomorrow is much better. Showers/bathrooms are great ..  they are self contained so you have your own private shower/bathroom.

A lot of driving around Custer Park ..Cost us $15 for a 7 day pass .. and we’re close to park so we can travel in/out as often as we want.  So far .. we give Custer State Park a big thumbs  up .. nice scenery .. several nice lakes  (would have been great to have our kayaks) ..  wildlife .. and Park was not that crowded (bad weather may have helped).

Several different loops to drive .. scenic loop(s) and wildlife loop. Scenic loop took us around a lot of winding/switchback/blind curves that you could only drive 15-20 mph. Several unique rock formations .. ‘The Needle’ (looks like a sewing needle) ..  one lane tunnel(s)..  (folded truck mirrors in to squeeze through) …  a winding section of road called ‘The Pigtails’ .. As we exited  one of the tunnels .. we came out to a view of Mt Rushmore .. looked like the tunnel walls were framing it.

Wildlife loop took us through open fields/pastures where wildlife is present .. brochures say there are up to 1500 bison in the park .. we came across 10 of them ..  so that means we’ll be looking for the other 1490 tomorrow .. The bison we did see were just off the road .. so we could get pretty close to them .. which is always fun.. they are huge beasts.. and appear gentle .. I could get pretty close to them .. and they wouldn’t move .. BUT .. I would not want any of them to get upset with me .. they can move fast when they want to !  We passed a group of roaming burros .. they walked by truck .. had drivers window to take photos and 2 of them tried to stick their heads in the window .. surprised me .. so no good photos ..  for a second I thought of petting them .. but .. with those huge teeth .. and camera in my hand .. I resisted the temptation. Terri was able to get a good closeup of a pronghorn antelope ..

Done with our loops .. we stopped for dinner .. thought I’d try buffalo something .. anything .. just to taste it .. went for the buffalo meatloaf .. pretty good .. throw some gravy and mushrooms on it .. you couldn’t tell it was buffalo ..  Terri said .. ‘she leave tomorrow without trying a buffalo burger …’   wait a minute  .. correction  .. Terri NEVER wants to taste a bison burger !

Forcast looking much better for tomorrow .. hope to see blue sky .. warmer temps .. and less wind !

Sounds like a nice place! LAK lived in South Dakota when she was in HS I think. She wants to take me to see Mt Rushmore. Good animal pix – especially the bison. Are they bison or buffalo? Is there a difference?
