Another day .. another 100+degrees … learning how to manage the temps .. get up early .. check off things on our to do list .. seek shelter in AC ! Also taking 2 showers a day .. morning and evening …
Took a nice hike this morning around 3 lagoons within Dead Horse Ranch (our campground) .. 3 pretty large lagoons with lots of birds and trails .. some in the shade.. shady trails have become our favorite! Lagoons were well maintained … someone from Parks Dept was out in a specialized boat .. thinning out the tall grass .. they do this thinning process twice a year to keep invasive grass from taking over the lagoons. Water was perfectly still .. when looking at photos .. reflections in water look like they are mirror images.
Horse sculptures made of metal … must be common in area I’ve seen a few them around town
Next we headed to town of Jerome .. approx 20 miles from Cottonwood. Jerome’s modern history began in 1876 when 3 prospectors staked claims on rich copper deposits. After several ownership changes .. in 1883 it became Arizona’s largest producing copper mine. Copper art and museums are to found in Jerome as well as Clarksdale .. it’s neighboring town. Jerome is a ‘quirky’ place .. old houses built in the hillside .. very windy roads to get into the small town. Town mostly catering to tourist crowd .. shops .. restaurants etc .. We made our contributions to town economy by spending $$ in some local establishments. Some pretty nice ($$) stores selling alot of unusual artistic merchandise .. Town reminded me abit like Woodstock NY … alot of craft merchants with a ‘hippy vibe’ !
Navigating some switchback roads to get into Jerome
Several old buildings in town that looked like they have been left in their original state
Our last nite in Cottonwood .. tomorrow we head to our next destination … Tucson .. where temps may even be abit warmer ???
After sun went down .. thought I’d stroll around campgrounds with camera … found a few critters… 2 snakes .. rabbits .. and some quail looking birds … Googled snake .. it’s common and it’s venomous…….. They must like lying on cool pavement when sun goes down .. both sightings were on pavement … heading for cover.
Rabbit was huge .. first thought it was a small deer
